Melodic Minions

Programme Overview

At the Vocal Manoeuvres Academy Melodic Minions program we know that young children will sing their favourite songs with unbridled passion every time. We know that by utilising favourite songs as the basis of our teaching, our young students will feel they ‘own’ the song and, the more that they see their peers enjoying it with the same fervour, they will like it even more and will want to sing it to everyone with their full voice and heart. We know that this is the beautiful musical culture of all young children.

In the Vocal Manoeuvres Academy, our strength is that we connect the young child’s natural ability to be authentic and expressive to all genres of music including contemporary, rock, pop, folk and classical.

We develop each child’s listening, musical thinking and music competency through using familiar songs in a solo and collaborative music-making ensemble with their peers and then take them on a journey of movement games, songs with percussion instruments, international lullabies and songs in many languages. We listen and respond to our students in a musical community offering them the opportunity to listen and learn other repertoire that they might not have otherwise the chance to hear. By encouraging our young students to listen to diverse musical possibilities at a time in their lives when they are open and receptive, we expand the catalog of music that will be personal, relevant and meaningful to them.

Our Melodic Minions program embraces opportunities to functionally explore sound with unique voices, discover moments to create a variety of sounds, develop responsiveness as an ensemble and develop the ability to make personal musical choices. We optimise children’s vocal accuracy, ear training development and the development of their expressive capabilities through the immediate modelling and feedback they receive from us and also through the experience of an ensemble singing beautifully and joyously in harmony.

Our singing lessons include:

• Understanding of Vocal Function - techniques for the young, developing voice.

• Aural exploration for pitch and rhythmic development. Learn how to sing intervals and melodic patterns, and be able to sight sing and improvise.

• Song choices are created for working on different elements of the voice. These songs are used as exercises, concentrating on one aspect of vocal technique at a time. Once mastered, more advanced songs are chosen to combine these techniques for further development.

• Theory as a scientific foundation is important for understanding music and helps build a better musician. Notation, form, keys and time signatures. We immerse students in the musical language and teach them how to follow a song using a score.
